Topic: Hardwiring Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion into Clinical Teaching

Credits Offered: This event offers 5.0 contact hours to attendees.

Purpose of Program: To prepare practice-ready graduates many schools of nursing have adopted a clinical judgment model (CJM) to provide a framework for their curriculum. Missing from most CJMs are clear principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, imperative to prepare a nursing workforce to care holistically for diverse populations. This program will offer educators an adapted model of clinical judgment with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles that can be woven into their clinical teaching.

Program Objectives:

  • Discuss the need for modification of the clinical judgment model and the addition of diversity, equity and inclusion principles.
  • Explore clinical education techniques to promote clinical judgments and keep DEI principles at the forefront.
  • Analyze how learning can be incorporated to enhance teaching practices.
  • Examine a method to promote clinical judgment teaching by clinical faculty.

Speakers:

Janet Monagle PhD, RN, CNE

SON Director of Quality and Compliance at Northeastern University

Dr. Monagle is a clinical professor and SON Director of Quality and Compliance at Northeastern University in Boston with over 25 years of teaching and leadership experience in nursing education. She has served as Director of the PhD program at Endicott College and as the Director of Academic Affairs at Lawrence Memorial/Regis College. She is past president of Massachusetts/Rhode Island League for Nursing (MARILN), served on the board at ANAMASS, and was recently appointed to the Board of Registration for Nursing (BORN) in Massachusetts. Dr. Monagle is dedicated to advancing the science of nursing education in clinical judgment development. She is currently on the advisory board of International Consortium for Outcomes of Nursing Education (ICONEd) a monthly collaboration of national and international educational experts and practice partners, with a goal of progressing nursing education research.

Lisa Gonzalez MSN, ,RN

Professor of Nursing, College of Southern Maryland

Lisa graduated in 2002 with a Biology degree from Evangel University and then realized her passion was nursing. She completed a Bachelor’s in Nursing in 2006, received a Master's in Nursing Education in 2012, and is now working on a Ph.D. in nursing education. She has an extensive list of publications on clinical judgment.

Rachael Salguero PhD, RN-BC, CNEcl

Instructor, Track Coordinator of Nursing Education Department of Labor Grant, MGH Institute of Health Professions

Rachael Salguero, PhD, RN-BC, CNEcl is an instructor in the School of Nursing at the MGH Institute of Health Professions and a clinical staff nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is board certified in medical-surgical nursing and is a certified academic clinical nurse educator. Rachael teaches Common Problems of Adult Health and Clinical Judgement in the prelicensure program. Her clinical background includes medical-surgical nursing and respiratory acute care nursing. Rachael is the President-Elect of the Massachusetts/Rhode Island League for Nursing (MARLIN), and a member of the Executive Leadership Team of the Massachusetts Regional Caring Science Consortium (MRCSC). Rachael was the recipient of the MGH Institute of Health Professions School of Nursing Excellence in Teaching Award in 2022.
